Kangaroo Island is located west of Cape Jervis at the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula and is about 105 kilometres (65.6 miles) from Adelaide. Covering 4,850 sq kilometres (1,876 sq miles), Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island.

Kangaroo Island is mosly native vegetation and a quarter of it is conserved in National Parks, Conservation Parks, and five Wilderness Protection Areas. The main protected areas are Flinders Chase National Park, Seal Bay Conservation Park, Cape Gantheaume Wilderness Protection Area, Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area and Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area. The Island has abundant native wildlife.
